Some homeowners don’t realize that the heat in their home is being lost due to drafts or inadequate insulation. When this happens, the heating system needs to work harder and energy costs go up. Heat your home efficiently by improving insulation, reducing drafts, and conserving energy.

Heat Your Home Efficiently With Insulation

Adding extra insulation can make a significant difference in your monthly heating bill. The attic is a good place to start. Warm air tends to rise, so if your attic is not properly insulated, it will simply escape through your roof.

Sealing Drafts

Drafts are another area of concern if you want to heat your home efficiently. First, you need to figure out where drafts are coming in. To do this, wait for a windy day. Light a small candle or stick of incense and trace all window sills and door jambs. If the candle flickers, air is getting in. A thin line of silicone caulking around the window or weatherstripping around the door can seal it. Finally, do not forget about pet doors. Prevent any drafts that may come in the pet door by placing a vinyl curtain over each side.

Energy Conservation

Conserving energy is another way to heat your home efficiently. Start by performing regular maintenance on your heating unit. A heating unit that is not working properly can easily double your heating costs by using more energy. Regular inspections and changing the air filter are some maintenance tasks that can save energy. Another great tip is to reuse your oven heat. When you are done baking, open the oven door and let the heat escape. Finally, hang thermal curtains on all windows. Keep the curtains open during the day to let passive heat from sunlight in. Remember to close the curtains at night to help prevent heat from escaping.
